Honorary Consul for South Africa, Mr. Lee Shultz, and the local South African community organized a memorial in Kansas City to remember and celebrate the life of Former South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on the Day of Reconciliation, December 16, 2013.
On 18 July 2013, the South African Consulate General in partnership with a coalition of interfaith leaders held a service at the Chicago State University in honor of Nelson Mandela Day.
On 17 July 2013, the Honorable LaJune Thomas Lange, South African Honorary Consul, sponsored a series of events in honor of Nelson Mandela Day. Members of the public were invited to sign the “Book of Honors and Tributes” to celebrate the birthday and legacy of Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela. The book signing took place at Augsburg College in the Oren Gateway Center. Judge Lange was joined by South African Consul Political Fransie Cooper and a community of supporters.
On 18 July 2013, the South African Consulate General in Chicago participated in Nelson Mandela Day activities in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. The activities included the dedication of a bench and the planting of a tree in honor of the Former President Nelson Mandela. Ms. Fransie Cooper, Consul Political, and Ms. Carla Cherry represented the Consulate in Minnesota.
